This is the place where Crown Prince Sado, who accompanied King Yeongjo on his visit to the hot-spring palace at Onyang, practised martial arts. To commemorate this, the crown prince had Yun Yeom, magistrate of Onyang, plant three zelkova trees here. Later, in 1795 — nineteen years after his son King Jeongjo came to the throne — the king ordered Byeon Wijin, magistrate of Onyang, and Yi Hyeong-won, governor of Chungcheong Province, to build Yeonggoedae on this spot. Once construction was complete, a stele recording the process was erected beside the pavilion; the title carved on its front, 'Yeonggoedaebi' (Stele of Yeonggoedae), was written by King Jeongjo himself.
