Geumsidang Hall Baekgokjae Hall, Miryang
밀양 금시당 백곡재 · 밀양 今是堂 栢谷齋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis site consists of two buildings, Geumsidang Hall and Baekgokjae Hall. Geumsidang was built by the Joseon-period civil official Yi Gwang-jin, known by his pen name Geumsidang, who in his later years returned to his hometown and built it to teach his students. Yi Gwang-jin (1517–?) passed the state civil examination in 1546, the first year of King Myeongjong, and took part in compiling the Veritable Records of King Jungjong and King Injong; he later rose to the post of Left Deputy Royal Secretary. The name Geumsidang is taken from Tao Yuanming's poem 'Guiqulaici' ('The Return'), meaning to enjoy one's remaining years amid mountains, water and the countryside. Geumsidang, first built in 1566, the twenty-first year of King Myeongjong, burned down during the Japanese invasions of 1592, and the building standing today was restored in 1743 by Yi Ji-un, known by his pen name Baekgok. Baekgokjae was built in 1860, the eleventh year of King Cheoljong, to commemorate Yi Ji-un. A ginkgo tree planted personally by Yi Gwang-jin still stands here, blending well with the view of the Miryang River seen from Geumsidang.
