Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGoryeong Hyanggyo stands within the old castle site in Yeonjo-ri, in the town of Goryeong, and comprises the Daeseongjeon Hall, Myeongnyundang Hall, Binhongjae, and a storehouse. According to the Hyeonhak Igeon-gi (Record of the Relocation of the County School), the school was first founded two ri west of Goryeong county, at a site now unknown; in 1701, the 27th year of King Sukjong, the county magistrate Gu Mun-yu rebuilt it, but as the site was considered inauspicious it was moved again to its present location in the second month of the following year. With the exception of the Daeseongjeon and Myeongnyundang, the buildings are recent constructions: the Binhongjae was relocated from a private memorial hall in 1917, the outer three-bay gate was newly built in 1974, the inner three-bay gate in 1983, and the east and west halls (Dongmu and Seomu) around 1990. Goryeong Hyanggyo follows the jeonhak-humyo layout, with the lecture halls at the front and the shrine behind, set at the foot of a mountain and facing south-east. On a site built up in two terraces, the outer gate and Myeongnyundang stand at the front, while the inner gate and Daeseongjeon are arranged on the same axis at the rear. The Daeseongjeon is a gable-roofed building three bays wide and two bays deep. The central bay is slightly wider than the flanking ones, and each front bay has a pair of hinged wooden plank doors. It is built on a five-purlin frame with simple chogikgong brackets, standing on a platform of granite slabs. The Myeongnyundang measures five bays across the front and two and a half bays in depth, following the jungdang-hyeopsil type, with a three-bay wooden-floored hall in the centre flanked by two-bay heated rooms on either side. It has a five-purlin frame without bracket sets, and a long veranda runs along the front. The Dongmu and Seomu, set at angles on either side of the Daeseongjeon, are straight, single-line, gable-roofed buildings three bays wide and one bay deep. Goryeong Hyanggyo well illustrates the characteristics of local Confucian school architecture built in the Gyeongsangbuk-do region from the 18th century onward.
