This building was erected by Jeong Seok-dal (1660–1720), a descendant of Jeong Se-a, a righteous-army leader during the Japanese invasions of Korea, so that he could teach scholarship. Jeong Seok-dal was a Neo-Confucian scholar of the late Joseon period held in high regard for his character and virtue. He spent his life discussing scholarship with Yi Hyeong-sang, known by his pen name Byeongwa, and his surviving writings include the collection Garye Gojeung. Built in 1702, the 28th year of King Sukjong, under the name Allakjae, the building was rebuilt in 1779, the third year of King Jeongjo, by the scholar's grandson Ilchangong, who renamed it Hamgyejeongsa.
