Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis shrine holds the memorial rites for Yi Ju-hwan, a patriot of the late Joseon period, and his teachers Song Byeong-seon and Song Byeong-sun. Song Byeong-seon (1836–1905) was a ninth-generation descendant of Song Si-yeol and the elder brother of Song Byeong-sun. A literary scholar of the late Joseon period who never took up office, he led a movement opposing the forced conclusion of the Eulsa Treaty by Japan, and in December 1905, grieving bitterly over the loss of national sovereignty, he took his own life. Song Byeong-sun (1839–1912), the younger brother of Song Byeong-seon, was outstanding in both scholarship and conduct, and devoted all his energy to guiding fellow literati and fostering national consciousness. Following the illegal conclusion of the Eulsa Treaty in 1905 he pressed ahead with the independence movement, and in 1912, resolved to die for his country, he took his own life by poison. Today the site is used as a place for educating the Confucian scholars of Geochang.
