Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue stands at Gwaneumsa Temple in Asan-ri, Yeongin-myeon, Asan-si, Chungcheongnam-do. The body, the halo (gwangbae) and the pedestal (daejwa) were all carved from a single stone. It measures 320cm in height, 110cm in width and 18cm in thickness. The face is round and full, conveying a sense of compassion, and a small hole has been bored into the forehead. The robe, which covers both dignified shoulders, bears no pattern of any kind. The right hand is extended down, lightly holding the hem of the robe near the thigh, while the left hand is raised to the right side of the chest with the thumb and middle finger touching. The two feet, carved on a pedestal engraved with lotus petals, take an unusual form in which the heels are joined together while the toes point in different directions. The halo, representing the light radiating from the whole body, survives only faintly, with traces of both the head halo and the body halo barely visible. Judging from its overall style and carving technique, the statue is thought to have been made during the Goryeo period.
