This house stands halfway up the hillside of Geumgwang village, where the Indong Jang clan settled more than 300 years ago. The exact date of its construction is unknown, but it is thought to have been built by Jang Yeon-gu (1802–1892), who held the office of Dongjijungchubusa, a senior court post, during the reign of King Heonjong of Joseon. Known as Yeonggamdaek, after the respectful title yeonggam once given to its owner, the house has an overall square (ㅁ-shaped) plan. Only the detached sarangchae (men's quarters) has a hipped-and-gabled roof, whose side roofline takes the form of the character 八 (eight); the anchae (main quarters) and the other buildings have gabled roofs, whose side roofline takes the form of the character 人 (person). The house retains well the characteristic features of folk house architecture of the late Joseon period.
