This is a Maitreya Buddha standing on a secluded hillside in Sinhyeon-ri, Yeongin-myeon, Asan-si, Chungcheongnam-do, carved onto a broad, flat slab of granite. It is 215 cm tall and 106 cm wide at the shoulders. The head wears a large, round crown that appears to imitate an ordinary gat, the traditional horsehair hat. The eyes and eyebrows are carved long, reaching almost to the ears, while the mouth is carved relatively small by comparison, giving the face a solemn expression. On the neck, three distinct lines represent the samdo, the three creases conventionally shown on the necks of Buddhist images, and the robe covers both shoulders. The right hand lightly grasps a long necklace hanging from the neck. The figure resembles a Buddhist monk more than a typical Buddha image, and seems to have been made in the spirit of folk belief, in the hope of attaining Maitreya's Pure Land. It is generally well preserved, and is presumed to date from the Joseon dynasty.
