Haenam Naedongnibatseom Island Tumuli
해남내동리밭섬고분군 · 海南內東里外島古墳群
Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krFollowing the road from Bugil-myeon toward Naedong-ri to the coast, and then a short way north-east along the seawall, one reaches Oedo Island. Oedo is a low island whose summit lies toward its eastern side; the eastern side, facing the open sea, forms a steep slope, while the south-western side, facing the inner sea, has a gentle slope. The tumuli sit side by side at the point on the summit with the finest view, distributed in a north-west to south-east line on the summit nearest the sea (22.5 m above sea level). On the eastern side closest to the sea, part of the mounds has been lost as the island has collapsed. Tomb No. 1 lies to the south of the island's summit; the north-eastern part of its mound has also been lost as the island collapsed. Traces of a sageong, a grassed embankment around a grave, remain on the south-western side of the mound for a civilian grave that has since been relocated. At the top of the mound, a stone-lined coffin tomb is exposed, oriented east–west, measuring about 200 cm in length, 60 cm in width and 60 cm or more in depth. The mound is circular in plan, about 20 m in diameter and about 1.5 m high. Traces of a surrounding ditch, about 4 m wide, remain at the edge of the mound. Tomb No. 2 lies about 10 m from Tomb No. 1; here too a stone-lined chamber is exposed at the top of the mound, and the north-eastern part of the mound has been lost as the island collapsed. The stone coffin tomb exposed at the top is oriented east–west, measuring 180 cm or more in length, 50 cm in width and 20 cm or more in depth. The mound is circular in plan, 15 m in diameter and 1.5 m high. Faint traces of a surrounding ditch, about 3 m wide, can be identified around the mound.
