Bagyeonjeong Pavilion, Miryang
밀양 박연정 · 密陽 博淵亭

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBagyeonjeong is a pavilion built by Kim Tae-heo (1555-1620), a military official of the mid-Joseon period whose pen name was Bagyeonjeong, so that he could spend his remaining years there after leaving office. Kim Tae-heo was known for his loyal and unaffected character. During the Japanese invasion of 1592 (the Imjin War) he distinguished himself in battle as magistrate of Miryang and county magistrate of Ulsan, rose to senior rank, and went on to serve as Dochonggwan (Commander-in-Chief), Howidaejang (Chief of the Royal Guard) and other posts before reaching the office of Jijungchubusa. Bagyeonjeong was first built around 1613, and the pavilion standing today was repaired by his descendants in 1864. It measures three kan across the front and two kan on the side, and is roofed with a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof, which forms the shape of the Chinese character for "eight" (八) when viewed from the side.
