Nangoksa Temple, Namhae
남해 난곡사 · 蘭谷祠

This is a shrine to Baek I-jeong (1247–1323), an outstanding Confucian scholar of the late Goryeo period. In 1298, the 24th year of King Chungnyeol, Baek I-jeong accompanied the king to China, where he studied Neo-Confucianism for ten years before returning to spread the teaching throughout Korea. His disciples included Yi Je-hyeon and Bak Chung-jwa, and under King Chungseon he served as Dogamsa of the Sanguihoeui before being enfeoffed as Sangdang-gun. The main hall, Nangoksa, measures three kan across the front and one kan to the side. Its roof is a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof, which forms the shape of the character 八 when viewed from the side, and the ancestral tablet of Baek I-jeong is enshrined at the front of the interior. The complex also includes an outer gate built in recent times, along with the Dodongjae building and an inner gate within the grounds. Every year, on the tenth day of the third lunar month, the local Confucian scholars of the area gather here to hold a memorial rite before the tablet of Baek I-jeong.
