When the March First Movement spread across the country in 1919, Confucian scholars also drafted a lengthy letter appealing for Korea's independence to be sent to the peace conference held in Paris, France. This became known as the Paris Jangseo Incident. Yonggangjeongsa and Imnijeong here served as the gathering place where the Confucian scholars assembled, drafted the letter and pooled their collective resolve in preparing it. Yonggangjeongsa measures four kan across the front and one-and-a-half kan to the side (a kan being the traditional unit of bay spacing in Korean architecture); its roof is a matbae, or gable roof, which viewed from the side resembles the character "人" (person), giving the building a distinctive formal beauty. Imnijeong measures three kan across the front and two kan to the side, with a paljak, or hip-and-gable roof, which viewed from the side resembles the character "八" (eight). Yonggangjeongsa is notable for the excellence of its architectural composition and structural condition, while Imnijeong is arranged in harmony with its surrounding scenery; both are therefore designated and preserved as Items of Cultural Heritage Material.
