Yeongin Five-story Stone Pagoda
영인오층석탑 · 靈仁五層石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis pagoda stands on a hill near Gwaneumsa Temple in Asan. The history of the temple it once belonged to, and the specific origins of the pagoda, are not recorded. It takes the form of a five-storey body set on a two-tier platform (gidan), topped with a finial. The lower platform is partly damaged, while the upper platform bears a fully blooming lotus motif on its upper surface. The body of the pagoda consists of separate body stones and roof stones for each storey. Each storey's body stone has pillar-shaped carvings at the corners, and on one face of the first-storey body stone a lock shape is carved in relief. The roof stones have a gentle slope, with the four corners curving slightly upward for a light, buoyant effect; the underside has three tiers of supports on the first and second storeys and two tiers on the third, fourth and fifth storeys. At the top, only the noban (the base of the finial) and the bokbal (an upturned-bowl-shaped ornament) remain of the head ornament. The rate of reduction as the pagoda rises is well proportioned, and despite some damage, the pagoda retains a relatively complete overall form.
