The shrine on Sonjukdo Island, Yeosu, was built by the island's residents at the site where Yi Dae-won (1566–1587), the sugun manho (naval garrison commander) then in charge of the Nokdo naval garrison, fought a fierce battle against invading Japanese pirates in 1587 — five years before the Imjin War — repelling the enemy before dying in the fighting. The shrine was repaired in 1919 and 1923, and in 1983 the villagers rebuilt the present shrine building through their devoted efforts; from that time it has been called Chungnyeolsa Shrine. Through the deeds of General Yi Dae-won, it is a historic site where a national crisis was overcome, and as a patriotic heritage site on an island far from the mainland that honours the memory of a worthy forebear, it holds value both historically and as a place.
