These are records compiled by thirty scholars from the Gonyang and Hadong areas who gathered to commend the filial devotion shown by Chu Seong-won toward his parents, together with the reply letters (dapseo) that were sent in response. Chu Seong-won lived during the reigns from King Sunjo to Emperor Gojong of the Joseon dynasty. At the age of twelve or thirteen, when his father Chu Min-jung fell gravely ill, he cut flesh from his own thigh to feed him, and when his mother, Lady Hwang, suffered a severe illness, he went so far as to perform danji — cutting off the tip of a finger to draw blood to give to a parent or spouse in mortal danger — such was the depth of his filial piety.
