Yaeunjae, the sarangchae (men's quarters) of the Yi Jin-hwan House, Jangseong, was the residence of Yi Yong-jung (pen name Yaeun, 1841-1919) in his later years. It measures five bays across the front and two bays to the side, a single-row (il-shaped) building arranged parallel to the anchae (main women's quarters), with a wide wooden-floored hall along the front and sides. The interior is divided into three rooms and one storage space, making five units in total including the floored hall, and the entrance doors are hinged, swing-type doors. The foundation is a single course of dressed granite, 45 cm high, and the plinth stones set upon it are natural, unshaped field stones (makdol deombeong plinths). The umulmaru (well-pattern wooden floor) that occupies much of the sarangchae stands 60 cm high, and the walls are built of jaesabyeok, a mud-and-straw plaster. The eaves are single eaves (hotcheoma) projecting 125 cm, the eaves purlin is a round purlin (guldori) 20 cm in diameter, the ceiling above the daecheong (main hall floor) is an open yeondeung ceiling with its structural timbers left exposed, and the roof is thatched with rice straw. The sarangchae of the Yi Jin-hwan House, Jangseong (Yaeunjae), was originally the lecture hall of a sau (private Confucian shrine) built in 1832, which was relocated and converted for use as the sarangchae of a private house. As an old building that illustrates the process by which traditional buildings were adapted for new uses, it has academic and local historical value.
