Sansin Buddhist Painting of Jeongchwiam Hermitage, Sancheong
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

A taenghwa is a Buddhist painting made in the form of a framed picture or hanging scroll, so that it can be hung in the main hall of a temple. This painting, preserved at Jeongchwiam Hermitage, depicts the mountain spirit (sansin); it measures 150 cm across and 150 cm high. In most such paintings the mountain spirit sits beside a tiger, but in this one he is shown riding the tiger as if setting out somewhere, flanked on either side by attendant boys following him. The work displays outstanding brushwork, and its date of production is recorded as the 33rd year of King Sunjo of Joseon (1833).
