Sinchanghakseong Fortress
신창학성 · 新昌鶴城

This is a stone fortress built using the terrain at the summit of Hakjeongsan Mountain, 183 m above sea level, in Eumnae-ri, Sinchang-myeon, Asan-si, South Chungcheong Province; its circumference is about 500 m. The fortress was built at the northernmost end of the mountain ridge. On the west, the wall passes close to the summit, while the eastern wall descends to around the middle of the mountainside; the south and north sides bulge outward. Most of the wall has collapsed, but the section to the south-east survives well, standing about 6 m high on the outside with a wall thickness of about 2 m. The wall was built by neatly fitting dressed stones together on its outer face. Traces of gates remain on the Eumnae-ri side and to the south-west, and a similar feature exists to the north, though it is not certain whether this was a north gate. At the northern summit inside the fortress there is a broad level area with good views to the east, west and north, suggesting that a building once stood there. Near the eastern wall is a large hollow that appears to have been a reservoir. Roof-tile fragments bearing fish-bone, lattice, wave and plain patterns have been found near the gate sites and the level area inside the fortress, suggesting that the fortress was used over a long period.
