Ugyedang Hall, Sancheong
산청 우계당 · 山淸愚溪堂

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krIt was built in the early Joseon period by Confucian scholars as a seowon (private Confucian academy) for education, but is now used as a shrine housing ancestral tablets where memorial rites are held. It measures six bays across the front and three bays to the side, and has a hipped-and-gabled roof (paljakjibung) that resembles the Chinese character for 'eight' when viewed from the side. Set on a high foundation, it has a toenmaru (narrow wooden veranda floor) along the front and both sides, fitted with a railing, giving it the appearance of a pavilion. It is made sturdy by the use of a single unbroken main beam, and the ondol-heated rooms on either side each have a firebox, forming an unusual structure in which the chimneys emerge through the face of the foundation.
