Seated Hadong Cheongnyong-ri Stone Buddha
하동청룡리석불좌상 · 河東靑龍里石佛坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue was found in the fields in front of Cheongnyong village, Okjong-myeon, Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, in an area popularly known as 'Umanideul' or 'Umani Jeolteo' (Umani temple site). It was discovered in 1954 during construction work, and is now housed in a protective shelter built through the combined efforts of local residents. The head of the statue is badly damaged, and the face is worn to the point where its form is difficult to make out. However, three clear lines of samdo, the three creases traditionally carved on the neck, remain visible, and the drapery folds are rendered in a simple, unadorned manner. Because of the severe damage it is not certain, but the hand gesture is close to one associated with Amitabha Buddha. Overall, the simple execution without elaborate technique suggests that it was made in the late Goryeo period.
