Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Maniram Five-story Stone Pagoda stands at the Maniramji site, near the summit of Duryunsan Mountain, where the former Maniram Hermitage once stood. The site preserves the foundations that attest to the hermitage's former presence, together with the five-story stone pagoda, and scattered remains including stone lantern parts, a millstone, the trace of a well, and other stonework. Standing about 5.4 metres tall, the pagoda shows signs of having collapsed or been looted: its finial is missing, and in its place a stone lantern's upper platform stone and roof stone have been set on top. The body of the pagoda is normally made of one stone each for the body and the roof per storey, but on the first storey two body stones are stacked together. Judging from its form, the pagoda is presumed to date from the middle Goryeo period or later. The 'Manilam-siljeok' (Record of the Achievements of Maniram Hermitage) within the Maniramji, a written record of the hermitage, states that a seven-story stone pagoda once stood in the middle of the hermitage's courtyard, suggesting that the pagoda originally had seven storeys. The Manilam-siljeok further states that Maniram Hermitage lies below Garyeonbong Peak on Duryunsan Mountain, occupying the highest ground among the various hermitages of Daedunsa Temple, and that, according to old records, it was the first of them to be founded and the very place from which Daedunsa Temple began.
