Iudang Hall was built around 1470 by Sin Yeong-myeong. It has a gabled roof and measures five kan across the front and two kan along the side; its timber frame is a five-ryang, or five-purlin, structure with an extra row of pillars at the front, and trapezoidal board struts set atop the beams support the ridge purlin. Surrounding buildings include a shrine, a lecture hall, an inner sammun gate, an outer sammun gate, and a caretaker's house. In 1580, Sin Yeong-myeong's grandson, Sin Hui-nam, who had served as Governor of Gangwon Province, retired after forty years in office and returned home, where he repaired the by-then dilapidated hall. He dug a pond and planted lotus, a symbol of integrity, and planted black bamboo on the hillside, a symbol of loyalty, and for this named the hall's plaque Iudang, meaning 'Hall of Two Friends'. Iudang Hall was a place where great Confucian scholars such as Yulgok Yi I, Haseo Kim In-hu, Saam Park Sun, Cheongnyeon Yi Jun-baek, Yakpo Jeong Tak, Okbong Baek Gwang-hun, Ilsong Sim Hui-su, Haui Im Eok-ryeong, and Yeongcheon Sin Jam discussed Confucian learning and moral integrity. Later, Sin Hui-nam's great-grandson Cheonik (1592–1661) repaired the hall and took up residence there, after which figures such as Mungok Kim Su-hang, Yangcheon Nam Gu-man, and Baekgang Yi Gyeong-yeo frequented it to discuss morality and literature. Since then Iudang Hall has been repeatedly repaired and preserved to the present day, and Han Seok-bong, renowned as the finest calligrapher under heaven, also learned calligraphy here.
