Seong An-ui Portrait
성안의 초상 · 成案義 肖像

This is a portrait of Seong An-ui (1561–1621), a civil official and righteous-army leader of the mid-Joseon period. Seong An-ui passed the civil service examination in 1591, the twenty-fourth year of King Seonjo, and when the Japanese invasions broke out the following year he raised a militia in Changnyeong and served under Gwak Jae-u, later holding posts including magistrate of Gwangju. The portrait shows him full-length, standing with his hands folded inside his sleeves and his body turned slightly to the left, painted in colour on a green silk ground. His topknot is visible, and his long, flowing beard and narrow, upward-slanting eyes are striking. Beneath the hem of his pink overcoat, the tips of his leather shoes show, splayed in the shape of the character 八 (eight).
