Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krBuyongjeong Pavilion was built in 1582, the fifteenth year of King Seonjo, by Jeong Gu, whose pen name was Hangang (1543–1620), as a place to teach scholarship, and was later passed on to Seong An-ui, whose pen name was Buyongdang (1561–1629). Jeong Gu was Seong An-ui's teacher. In his early years he studied the Book of Changes and other texts under O Geon, and went on to grasp the essence of Neo-Confucian thought under Yi Hwang and Jo Sik. Renowned for his learning and integrity, he showed no attachment to official rank, devoting himself instead to scholarship and the training of younger scholars, and made a great contribution to the spread of Neo-Confucianism. The original pavilion burned down in 1727, the third year of King Yeongjo, and was rebuilt in 1780, the fourth year of King Jeongjo, but was destroyed again during the Korean War. The building standing today was reconstructed in its original form in 1955.
