Yeonggwang Myojangyeongdang Hall enshrined a portrait of Yi Cheon-u, a meritorious subject who helped found the Joseon dynasty, in 1616, the eighth year of King Gwanghaegun. Yi Cheon-u had distinguished himself in suppressing Japanese pirate raids in Jeolla-do, and when his descendants later moved from Damyang to Yeonggwang, they built this portrait hall together with the local Confucian community. After the hall was torn down in the late Joseon period, its lecture hall continued to serve as a village school. Reconstruction of the shrine room was proposed in 1928 and completed in 1934. The buildings are arranged along a well-defined central axis, giving the complex a cohesive architectural form, and each building has a stable, well-proportioned structure. Since its reconstruction the site has been kept in good condition, and related records have also been well preserved.
