Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a government office building where officials of Heunghae-gun conducted administrative affairs. It is not known when it was first built. The only surviving record is a ridge-raising inscription, said to date from a reconstruction, giving the fifteenth year of the Daoguang era (1835), though it is unclear whether this refers to the original construction or a later rebuilding. In 1925 the building was moved to the Heunghae township office, 70 m southeast of its original site, then in 1976 it was moved back and rebuilt on its original site. Both the walled town of Heunghae and its government office buildings were demolished during the Japanese colonial period, leaving this as the only building to survive. It has a rectangular, single-row plan measuring seven kan across the front and three kan deep. The roof is a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof, shaped like the Chinese character for "eight" (八) when viewed from the side. The bracket sets made to support the roof eaves are simply constructed.
