Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Muan Yusanjeongyujeok Stele stands together with Yusanjeong Pavilion. Yusanjeong Pavilion is traditionally said to have been built by Myeonnam Park Mun-o, a figure from the reign of King Chungnyeol of Goryeo, after he retired to his home village. Later, Park Mun-o's great-grandson, Pungjeong Park Ui-ryong, who was active during the founding era of Joseon and served as Minister of the Ministry of Personnel and of the Ministry of Taxation, is said to have come to live here after retiring from office. Aehanjeong Park Ik-gyeong, a seventh-generation descendant of Park Mun-o who retired to Muan during the reign of King Sejo, rebuilt Yusanjeong. Records of later repairs are not detailed, but the pavilion is thought to have served as a space for local exchange and as a communal gathering place for the descendants. In 1879, Park Gi-jong, who held the post of Sagan (Royal Censor), rebuilt it with the encouragement of Hong Jae-jeong, then magistrate of Muan County, and it was repaired again several times afterwards, including in 1905 and 1968, surviving to the present day. The Yusanjeongyujeok Stele was erected at the time of this reconstruction, led by the descendant Park Gi-jong, using an inscription composed by Myeonam Choe Ik-hyeon. It records the circumstances of Park Mun-o's building of Yusanjeong, his life, the history of the pavilion, and the branching and activities of his descendants. The inscription was composed by Myeonam Choe Ik-hyeon (1833–1906), and the characters were written by his descendant Park Gi-jun. At the end of the inscription is the date "丙申, the 250th year of Yeongnyeok," showing that the stele was erected in 1896, the first year of the Geonyang era. The Yusanjeongyujeok Stele is an inscribed stone monument containing records of Yusanjeong and of the Muan Park clan. It provides information not only on the pavilion's own history, from its first construction through repairs and rebuildings into the late Joseon period, but also on the settlement and distribution of the descendants, shedding light on the activities of a lineage group within local rural society. Although 1896 is not an especially early date for its erection, the stele also carries historical significance because its inscription was composed by Myeonam Choe Ik-hyeon.
