This building was built by Muram Kim Yung (1549–1594) to train younger scholars. Kim Yung studied under Toegye Yi Hwang and held a range of official posts. During the Japanese invasions of 1592 (the Imjin War), he proposed to Yu Seong-ryong strategies for repelling the Japanese forces and saving the people, and after his death he was posthumously appointed Jwaseungji (Left Royal Secretary) of the Seungjeongwon, the Royal Secretariat. Built in 1569, the second year of King Seonjo, this seodang (village school) has a front of four bays and a side of two bays, with a hipped-and-gabled roof whose profile, seen from the side, resembles the Chinese character for "eight" (八). The central two bays have a wooden floor, with ondol (underfloor-heated) rooms on either side, and the signboard bears the handwriting of Toegye Yi Hwang himself.
