Manilsa Temple Rock-carved Buddha
만일사마애불 · 晩日寺磨崖佛

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a seated Buddha image carved in relief on the natural rock face behind the main hall of Manilsa Temple, in Cheongheung-ri, Seonggeo-eup, Cheonwon-gun, South Chungcheong Province. The Buddha image is unfinished, and it is so badly worn that its outline is difficult to make out. The head is rectangular, and the contours of the face can barely be distinguished. Both shoulders appear broad and nearly horizontal, giving a dignified impression, and the figure sits with both feet placed on the knees, soles turned upward. Grooves in front of the Buddha and on either side above its head suggest that a protective shelter was once built over it.
