Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha image originally stood at the site of Hwajangsa Temple in "Hanjeokgol." The original site was altered by land readjustment, and the Buddha image was severely damaged, its neck broken in the course of a theft, so it was moved to its present location. Before it was damaged, the face is said to have had a plain hairstyle (sobal) with a usnisa (a cranial protuberance), short ears, and the three neck lines (samdo) that mark a Buddha. The robe is worn covering both shoulders (tonggyeon), and U-shaped folds repeat from the chest down to the abdomen. The hand gesture is the bhumisparsha mudra, touching the earth to call it as witness. The pedestal consists of an upper stone carved with upward-facing lotus petals and a lower stone carved with downward-facing lotus petals. The lotus design on the lower stone in particular is carved with great clarity and vigour. The overall height is 200 cm, the shoulder width 52 cm, and the width across the knees 83 cm. Judging from the overall style — the lotus pattern on the pedestal, the folds of the robe, and the broad, high knees — the Buddha image is thought to have been made during the Goryeo period.
