This pavilion was built around 1530, the twenty-fifth year of King Jungjong of Joseon, by the scholar Lee Goeng. Lee Goeng passed the civil service examination in 1480, the eleventh year of King Seongjong, and in 1500, after serving as jiphui (an executive official of the Office of the Inspector-General), became Yusu (governor) of Gaeseongbu. In 1504, the tenth year of Yeonsangun's reign, he was stripped of his official rank during the Gapja Sahwa, the literati purge of that year, but was reinstated in 1506 after the Jungjong Restoration. He later gave up office, came down to Andong, built this house, and devoted himself to scholarship and to enjoying nature. As the number of Andong scholars lodging and studying there grew, the building was enlarged and developed into an institution for learning and research. It was destroyed by fire in 1945 and rebuilt in 1946.
