This academy (hakdang) was built in 1890, the twenty-seventh year of Emperor Gojong, by Kim Sang-rak (pen name Choeun), holder of the Tongjeongdaebu rank and a sixth-generation descendant of the scholar Kim Cheon-il, in order to train younger students. Built in the late Joseon period, it was used for study across five generations of the Choeun branch of the Ilseon Kim clan, and over a hundred years it taught more than 300 students.
