담양송진우고택 · 潭陽 宋鎭禹 古宅

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Damyang Song Jin-u Historic House is the place where Song Jin-u (pen name Goha, 1890–1945) grew up; it is also the place where Gi Sam-yeon (pen name Seongjae), leader of the Honam righteous army in the late Korean Empire period, went into hiding after escaping from prison, having been arrested for resisting the court's order to disband the righteous army he had raised in its first uprising. Here Gi Sam-yeon educated Song Jin-u and planned future righteous-army activities, enabling him to raise the Honam righteous army, which served as the core force of the third uprising, the central campaign among the righteous armies of the late Korean Empire period. Because Song Jin-u's anti-Japanese resistance, educational work and pre-liberation activities contributed greatly to the nation and its people, he was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation on 1 March 1963. As the childhood home of Song Jin-u, who occupies an important place in modern national history, and as the hiding place and site of instruction of Gi Sam-yeon, commander-in-chief of the righteous armies of the late Korean Empire period, this house has value as modern heritage. Daegok-ri in Damyang has long been a settlement of the Sinpyeong Song clan, who moved there in the late Joseon period; the house consists of an anchae (main quarters) and a sarangchae that doubles as a mungan-chae (gate quarters), among other buildings. The anchae is known to have been built in the late Joseon period; its original structure survives but has been altered, while the gate-quarters-cum-sarangchae is an uncommon type of building in structural terms, though its roof was altered at a later date.
