Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJo Eung-in (曺應仁, 1556–1624) was a civil official of the mid-Joseon period. His ancestral seat was Changnyeong, his courtesy name was Seonbaek, and his pen name was Dochon. He studied under Jeong In-hong, known by the pen name Naeam, and raised a righteous army during the Japanese invasions of Korea. In 1599, the 32nd year of King Seonjo, he was appointed to the post of byeolje in the Sangsangwon (the office in charge of the royal wardrobe) but did not take up the position; he was later appointed Tutor to the Princes in 1607, the 40th year of King Seonjo. He subsequently served as an assistant section chief in the Board of Works and as magistrate of Onyang, among other posts. This yuseo, a document conveying the king's personal instructions, was issued by King Gwanghaegun to Jo Eung-in while he was serving as magistrate of Onyang, following a report submitted by the provincial governor Yi Chun-won. The document is written on hanji, traditional Korean paper, and remains in good condition.
