Sonjongnojeongchung Stele Pavilion
손종로정충비각 · 孫宗老旌忠碑閣

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele was erected to honour the loyalty of Son Jong-no (1598–1636), who died fighting to save the nation during the Manchu invasion of 1636 (the 14th year of King Injo of Joseon), together with his loyal slave Eokbu. Son Jong-no passed the military examination in 1618, the 10th year of King Gwanghaegun, and served as magistrate of Nampo. During the Manchu invasion he was killed in action together with his slave Eokbu at the Battle of Ssangnyeong in Icheon; as his body could not be recovered, a funeral rite was held using his clothing and a coffin in its place. The stele was erected by royal order in 1783, the 7th year of King Jeongjo. Its inscription was composed by Right Deputy Royal Secretary Lee Jeong-gyu and written in calligraphy by Jeong Chung-pil.
