Bakanju Yeopyo Stele, Haman
함안 박한주 여표비 · 咸安 朴漢柱 閭表碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stele was erected to honour the achievements of Bak Han-ju, pen name Ujolje, a civil official of early Joseon. Bak Han-ju (1459–1504) was a disciple of Kim Jong-jik. He passed the civil service examination in 1485, the 16th year of King Seongjong, and entered government service, holding posts including military inspector in the Hanseong government, inspector in the Office of the Censor-General, and a scholarly post at Seonggyungwan, the state Confucian academy, before requesting a transfer to care for his parents and taking up the post of magistrate of Changnyeong. While serving as magistrate he governed with benevolence, and the king rewarded him with silk and a royal letter of commendation. When the Muo Literati Purge broke out in 1498, he was exiled to Byeokdong on the charge of forming a faction and slandering state affairs, and he was executed during the Gapja Literati Purge of 1504. After the Jungjong Restoration of 1506 his unjust conviction was overturned and he was posthumously granted the post of Chief Royal Secretary. The stele and its protective pavilion were erected in 1629, the seventh year of King Injo, and have survived to this day.
