This mountain fortress was built atop Seonggeosan Mountain, 579m above sea level, in Seonggeo-eup, Cheonan, Chungcheongnam-do. According to the Jiksanhyeonji, a gazetteer of Jiksan County, King Taejo of Goryeo, while stopping at Suheorwon in Jiksan, looked towards a mountain to the east and, finding its five colours pure and beautiful, believed it to be a sacred mountain possessed of spiritual power; he ordered rites to be held there and gave it the name Seonggeosan. Whenever Baekje built a mountain fortress or a town wall, it invariably also built an ikseong (翼城), a subsidiary fortress raised to the left and right as if forming two wings. It is therefore reasonable to regard Seonggeosanseong as the wing fortress of Wirye Mountain Fortress, which suggests that it was built during the Three Kingdoms period. The site is now occupied by a military base, and much of the fortress wall was destroyed when a military communications facility was installed there, leaving little of its original appearance.
