Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis fortress stands at an altitude of 170m in Sinari, Jinwol-myeon, Gwangyang-si, Jeollanam-do, and is marked on maps as Bongimsanseong Fortress. The wall runs 100m in total length, encloses an area of 1,422㎡ and is 520cm wide, forming an elongated oval shape along an east-west axis. There are theories that it was first built as early as the Three Kingdoms period, or that it was constructed during the Japanese invasions of 1592, but its form and construction technique suggest it may in fact date from the Baekje period. It is a temoe-style fortress, a type that encircles a level area at a mountain's summit, and is built using the naeoehyeopchuk method, in which both the inner and outer faces of the wall are faced with stone. It is better preserved than many other mountain fortresses, and although part of the inner wall's southern section has collapsed, nine courses of stonework can still be identified there. A single fragment of grey-blue hard-fired earthenware has been collected at the site, but its date cannot be determined with certainty.
