KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stele was erected to commemorate the achievements of Ha Gyeong-sun (1875–1946), who served as jeopjang, or chief officer, of the Sangmu Jwausa in the 1890s. The Sangmusa was established in 1899, the third year of the Gwangmu era, as an institution to oversee commerce and to manage peddler guilds across the country; it named the busang, back-pack peddlers, as the Jwasa (Left Office), and the bosang, bundle peddlers, as the Usa (Right Office). The jeopjang was the overall head of the Sangmusa across both the Jwasa and the Usa, responsible for all its affairs and for convening and presiding over its general meetings; the post was filled every two years by a vote among regional representatives. Ha Gyeong-sun managed the markets conscientiously and fairly, making a great contribution to protecting and advancing the rights of merchants. The stele was erected by market people in 1911, and it is valuable both for understanding local economic history and as a piece of folk material.
