Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Changnyeong Jo clan documents from Seonjang-ri, Gangjin relate mainly to the activities of Jo Myeong-jo (1705–1776), and comprise 127 interconnected items: nine volumes of manuscript copies of his collected writings, two royal certificates of appointment (gyoji), one examination answer sheet (sigwon), one volume of an examination pass-list (bangmok), twelve household registers, one land deed (ipan), eighty-two personal letters (ganchal), one volume of village-compact (hyangyak) documents, four travel accounts, twenty items of poetry and prose (sichuk), one volume of a secretary's diary (seogwan ilgi), and three paintings. These documents reveal the background of a clan line that originally had ties to Yeongam before settling in Gangjin, and the poetry, prose, collected writings, travel accounts and letters convey the currents of rural society and the literary exchanges of the time. The text titled Seolhyangyak-ijeongpungsok is a village-compact (hyangyak) record containing historical material from the mid-18th century onward, and materials such as the Honam-chaek (a register relating to the Honam region) help in understanding conditions in late Joseon rural society. In addition, the Seogwan-ilgi, the diary Jo Myeong-jo kept while serving as a magistrate's private secretary (chaekbang), is valuable material for research into the role of magistrates' secretaries in the late Joseon period, and will also assist research into magistrates' authority and methods of local governance at the time. These documents are well preserved and have already been the subject of academic surveys, by the National Institute of Korean History and the Mokpo National University Museum, and are worth preserving. However, detailed analysis of the letters and poetry is still needed, and since a number of similar documents are also held elsewhere, there is a need to designate them as heritage materials for conservation and management.
