Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krDuring the Korean War, in 1950 Daecheon Police Station retreated south, and after the recapture of Seoul on 28 September it returned to the area; however, hostile local elements and remnants of the communist forces entrenched themselves around Seongjusan Mountain and threatened public order. To defend the police station, the then station chief Kim Seon-ho, with the cooperation and labour of local residents, had natural stone carried from the Seongjusan area from early October 1950, completing the building in February 1951. It is a war relic that was used both for night guard duty and to maintain public order within the station's jurisdiction. The structure was built of natural stone mixed with cement to a height of 10m and a circumference of 15m. Inside, 22 gun ports were installed to allow firing outward, and the interior was designed with four floors of flooring, with stairs giving access to the top. The roof is octagonal. Boryeong Police Station has maintained the building, repairing the roof and other damaged parts, and it was used until recently as a facility that sounded a siren at noon, at midnight, during curfews, and in emergencies such as fires.
