Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krJangheung Baeksanjae Hall was originally a clan memorial hall that is also used as the lecture hall of Hasansa Shrine, the ancestral shrine of the Jangheung Wi clan. It was originally a government office building of Jangheung-bu in the late Joseon period, moved to its present location in 1936 after two relocations; it is said that during this move the building was transferred almost exactly in its original form. Judging from its structural members and joinery techniques, Baeksanjae appears to date from the late Joseon period, around the 19th century. The building, six bays wide on the front and two bays deep, shows somewhat altered structural features as a result of relocation, but still clearly displays the form of a late-Joseon government office building, with its spacious daecheong hall and ondol-heated rooms. The timbers used, including the main beam, are very massive and solid, and all the columns are round. The frame uses a five-purlin structure, and the roof is of the hipped-and-gabled (paljak) type. Since almost no administrative government-office buildings survive from the Joseon period, Baeksanjae's good state of preservation makes it valuable research material for the study of such buildings. It also has architectural and historical value for the restoration of the Jangheung-bu government office, and for showing how the use of a public-institution building can change along with shifts in place and time.
