Sacheon Seonjilliseong Fortress
사천선진리성 · 泗川船津里城

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis fortress stands north of Seonjin Port in Sacheon-eup, Sacheon-si, Gyeongsangnam-do, built on a peninsula with sea on three sides and only its eastern side joined to the mainland. During the Joseon period the area was known as a port, and a seonjin (a frontline military garrison; seonjin means troops that take the lead in battle) was once stationed there. According to the records of the Eupji (local gazetteer) and the Daedongjiji (Augmented Survey of the Geography of Korea), this seonjin had one warship, one patrol vessel and two small boats, and so it was also called Samcheonjin. In the 30th year of King Seonjo's reign (1597), the Japanese commander Seokmanja stayed here, and together with Dosan in Ulsan and Waegyo in Suncheon, the three sites were known as the "Three Dens." Built by Japanese forces during the Japanese invasions of Korea (1592–98), the fortress's scale and structure indicate that it served as a major operational base, and it was also defeated by General Yi Sun-sin. Today about 1 km of the earthen ramparts survives; the stone-built tower (nu, a raised watch pavilion) has collapsed, but the site otherwise retains the original scale of the fortress.
