This is a portrait of Ha Yeon (1376–1453) and his wife, Lady Yi of Seongsan. A civil official under King Sejong, he rose from Daejehak, a senior post in the royal academy, to Yeonguijeong, the Chief State Councillor, the highest post in the government. Ha Yeon's son, Ha U-myeong, is said to have enshrined the portrait in the portrait hall beside his father's tomb and paid his respects before it morning and evening. In 1608, the 41st year of King Seonjo, it was moved to the shrine within Sincheon Seowon academy; when the Heungseon Daewongun's order abolishing seowon academies later led to the shrine being rebuilt at its present site, the portrait was moved together with it, and it has remained there to this day. The portrait follows the basic conventions of commemorative portraiture, and is notable for a feature rarely seen elsewhere: the wife's likeness enshrined side by side with her husband's. Judging from the painting technique and the texture of the materials, it appears to have been repainted at some later date, and is estimated to have been produced somewhere between 130 and 180 years ago. The portrait of Ha Yeon's son, Ha U-myeong, is now also kept together with it.
