Bang Gi-ok House
방기옥가옥 · 方基鈺家屋

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis house is said to have been built in the Joseon period by a senior official known as Jo-daegam ('daegam' being an honorific title for high-ranking officials); it takes its present name, Bang Gi-ok House, from its current owner. The building has a U-shaped (ㄷ-shaped) plan in which the main house (anchae), the men's quarters (sarangchae) and the servants' quarters (haengnangchae) are joined together. The anchae has six bays across its front, arranged from left to right as kitchen, main room, central hall (daecheong) and side room, with a raised wooden-floored pavilion (numaru) set in front of the side room. The sarangchae, at the centre, contains a room and a kitchen, while the haengnangchae, longer than the anchae, is set slightly offset from it.
