Seated Baengnyongsa Temple Stone Buddha
백룡사석조여래좌상 · 白龍寺石造如來坐像

Baengnyongsa Temple, in Sucheol-ri, Punggi-eup, Yeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, originally stood at the top of Jungnyeong Pass. It was dismantled just before the Korean War and rebuilt in 1952. The seated stone Buddha of Baengnyongsa sits on a pedestal (daejwa) that was originally made up of upper, middle and lower sections, but the lower stone has since been lost and only the middle stone remains. Behind the body is an oval, boat-shaped halo (gwangbae) carved from a separate stone. The outer robe covers both shoulders down to the knees, while the inner garment is carved with folds and a knotted sash at the abdomen. The halo is divided into a head halo carved with a lotus design and a body halo carved with three small Buddhas, cloud patterns and flame patterns. These halo patterns reflect a style that appeared after the golden age of Silla Buddhist sculpture had passed, and the statue is presumed to have been made in the late ninth century.
