Stone Pagoda in Danju-ri, Yeonggwang
영광 단주리 석탑 · 靈光 丹朱里 石塔

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krNo record of the Wolpyeong temple site, where the Danju-ri stone pagoda in Yeonggwang stands, can be found in any surviving documentary source, but the remains of stone flagpole supports (danggan-jiju) alongside the pagoda, together with roof-tile fragments found in the surrounding area, indicate that a temple once stood here. The pagoda survives today only up to its third storey, although oral tradition holds that it originally had seven storeys. Its base stone is buried in earth and cannot be seen in full, but the eastern side is visible, where long dressed stones are stacked in two tiers, giving the pagoda the appearance of having a double-tiered base. The pagoda is heavily worn, and because its individual members are no longer in their original positions, its original form is difficult to determine. However, judging from the surviving base stone, the base section, the pagoda body and the roof stones, it is presumed to have been made during the Goryeo period.
