Deogamseowon Confucian Academy
덕암서원 · 德巖書院

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis building was erected by Confucian scholars of the province to commemorate Yi Cheon-bae, Yi Cheon-bong and Yi Ju of the Gyeongsan Yi clan. Yi Cheon-bae and Yi Cheon-bong were brothers who studied together under Jeong Gu; of the two, Yi Cheon-bong held office in recognition of raising a righteous army in Seongju during the Jeongmyo War, the Manchu invasion of 1627. Built in 1672, the thirteenth year of King Hyeonjong of Joseon, this seowon, a Confucian academy, was originally established as Deogamsa Shrine, with the sole function of enshrining and holding memorial rites for venerable sages. It was dismantled in 1868, the fifth year of Emperor Gojong's reign, under the order to abolish seowon issued by Heungseon Daewongun, and appears to have taken on an educational function as well when it was rebuilt in 1876, the thirteenth year of Emperor Gojong, as Deogam Seodang, a village school. Passing through Geonmyeongmun Gate, which serves as the main entrance, one finds the school hall facing south-east. It measures five bays across the front and three bays to the side, with a hip-and-gable roof shaped like the Chinese character for 'eight' (八) when viewed from the side. The two central bays are floored as a wooden hall, flanked on either side by ondol, underfloor-heated rooms. It is a simple yet handsome building, notable for the gentle curve of its roofline.
