This house is traditionally said to have been the residence of Jo Du-sun, pen name Simam. Jo Du-sun (1796–1870) was a civil official of the late Joseon period who entered government service after placing first in the state examination in 1826, the twenty-sixth year of King Sunjo of Joseon. He subsequently rose through a succession of posts to become yeonguijeong, the highest-ranking state councillor, and served under a succession of monarchs including Sunjo, Heonjong, Cheoljong and Emperor Gojong. The house today consists of an L-shaped main house and an L-shaped servants' quarters, together with a separate building incorporating the main gate, the three together forming an enclosed, square layout. The front range, formed by the servants' quarters and gate building, measures six bays across the front and one bay deep. Its roof is a hip-and-gable roof that takes the shape of the Chinese character for 'eight' (八) when viewed from the side. The roof of the main house is also hip-and-gable, and there is a wooden-floored hall at the centre of the building.
