This stone Buddha, standing beside a road in Taehwa-ri, Bongsan-myeon, Gimcheon, North Gyeongsang Province, cannot be seen in its entirety, as the portion below the knees is buried in the ground. A topknot-shaped bun rises on the head, and long hair falls over the shoulders. The badly damaged, round face is rather full and plump, and the soft robe draped over both shoulders hangs down in long folds. In the village the statue is known as Munsu Bosal, the Bodhisattva of Wisdom, and it is said that offering prayers to it brings the birth of a son; even in recent times people are said to have come and prayed by candlelight. With its unusual style and fine carving technique, the statue is presumed to date from the early Goryeo period.
